About the Svajerløb – Cargo Bike Races

A number of companies and volunteers are behind arranging the Svajerløb. It is a not for profit event and for all involved it is really a con amore affair, fueled by their passion for Copenhagen's bicycle culture and cargo bikes. The idea to revive the historical Svajerløb started in 2009 when Erik Heinze (Firmacyklen.dk) and Hans Bullitt Fogh (Larry vs Harry) held the first modern version of the classic race. Together with Mikael Colville-Andersen and Søren Houen Schmidt, they form the nucleus of the team behind the Svajerløb.

Svajerløb 2011 is supported by Visit Carlsberg, The City of Copenhagen, Amager Cykel Ring, denanden.dk web design, Riff Skiltefabrik, Graphic Designer Rich Melcher and an army of passionate volunteers. In addition, the following companies are contributing with advertising or products: Winther, Merkur Bank...Do you want to be a sponsor or volunteer?. Svajerløb – Danish Cargo Bike Championships 2011

Copenhagen is well-known around the world as a modern bicycle city but our bicycle culture has a long and proud history. Throughout several decades the city's bicycle messengers – known as 'svajere' battled in unofficial races for bragging rights on Israels Plads in central Copenhagen. They raced with and without cargo and the races were popular among Copenhageners. It was a classic Copenhagen event that disappeared when cars started to dominate the urban landscape. The last race was in 1960. After 50 years the Svajere are back. Copenhagen is a cargo bike capital. There are around 40,000 cargo bikes in use each day in Greater Copenhagen and they are the Copenhagen version of the SUV, used for transporting children and goods. 25% of all families with two or more children have a cargo bike in the City of Copenhagen. Reviving the Svajerløb was a given back in 2009. Copenhageners can once again see the cargo bike races this year – this time Carlsberg is the location. The brewery also has a proud tradition of using cargo bikes to transport beer around the city throughout the last century.
